Anxious poems is a zine that was made after an anxiety outburst in Portugal. The poems and illustrations guide us through a journey that unfortunately is very familiar to queer people: fear of not being accepted, social anxiety, and depression. Queer people usually feel awkward, misunderstood, and not listened. This zine uses a twisted sense of humor, and thoughtful illustrations to show some of these moments, thoughts, and situations that can lead to feeling anxious. Anxious Poems is a reminder that vulnerability, and mental health can be celebrated through art.
Ruben Ramires is a self-taught queer immigrant artist originally from Portugal, based in Houston, Texas. He has a bachelor in Nursing, and divides his time between providing care for cancer patients, and making art. Ruben’s words and minimalist drawings are inspired by autobiographical, melancholic, mental health, and nature themes. He has been featured in literary magazines, published several zines, and last year he published his first Portuguese poetry book.
