Description
This is a collective story, bearing witness to our times. Although traveling different routes, the paths of all of these photographs converge here now. In sequencing them, I considered the word calypso, born of two origins–one from the Efik alteration of kaiso: a satirical song, used to encourage a person or urge them on; the other, from the Greek sea nymph, Kalypso, meaning “she who conceals.” The latter serves as the root of apocalypse, meaning unconcealed.
In conjunction with PhotoNOLA, the New Orleans Community Printshop & Darkroom has brought together friends with current and former members for our annual photo show. Like a dancer using a veil, the images within both shroud and reveal the scenes and characters that populate our worlds.
