SPARKLE by Sam O’Steen
Recently remade with Whitney Houston and released in 2012, this 1976 feature film with the same name is a rags-to-riches (and, for some, rags again) story of three teenage singers in Harlem who form a girl group in the late 1950s. Starring Irene Cara, Lonette McKee, and Philip Michael Thomas, and featuring original music by Curtis Mayfield, the low-budget original has since reached cult classic status since its successful mid-1970s release. (1976, 98 minutes)
