Ready or Not, Heal They Come!
I hear lots of grumbling around the Bywater and Marigny about the new St. Claude Healing Center that’s been installed at the corner of St. Claude and St. Roch Streets. Some call it a nefarious agent of gentrification; others say the gentrification has been going on for decades—the table has been set, and the Healing Center is just what the neighborhood ordered.
Regardless of your feelings, as usual, your feeling aren’t going to change shit. Parts of the center are already open and another big chunk will open up this Sunday, Aug. 28, during the Grand Opening Celebration.
Among the shops that will spring into business is the downtown branch of the Maple Street Book Shop. The opening event will take place from 10 a.m. – 10 p.m., and will feature a bevy of musicians and authors, including John Boutte and the Treme Brass Band, and Darryl Young and Freddi Evans, plus a second line starting at N. Rampart and Canal Streets. Read more here.
Room 220 will post an updated account of the Maple Street satellite shortly.
