Humor and activism have always existed in a unique position in our society, being seen as spaces for cultural analysis. Standup comedy often addresses under-discussed truths within the human subconscious and as a result can initiate cultural change, while activism is often at the forefront of that change. Issue 010 of Antenna::Signals will drop Wednesday, September 12, examining the theme of Stand Up! by giving voice to those whose work connects to humor or activism, and where they intersect to build a more joyous and equitable future.

This issue will include stories and presentations by:

Madeleine Grace Kelly – Artist and Yoga Instructor at ReNew Accelerated High School
Mwende Katwiwa – Poet, Activist and Community Organizer with Women with a Vision, Inc.
Tabitha Mustafa – Founder of the New Orleans Palestinian Solidarity Committee
Mary Lingwall – Client Services Co-Coordinator at New Orleans Abortion Fund, Inc.
Andrea Armstrong – Law Professor and Founding Board Member of The Promise of Justice Initiative
Tirock Moore – Conceptual artist working primarily with themes related to white supremacy, racism and systemic oppression
Geneva Joy – comedian and founder of Black Girl Giggles Comedy Festival

ABOUT ANTENNA::SIGNALS

Conceived as a “live arts magazine,” Antenna::Signals is a new sort of variety show by the artists and writers of Antenna. Each “issue” of Antenna::Signals features a spread of 6-8 local artists, writers, musicians, scientists and scholars whose practices relate thematically. The live event will be accompanied by the release of a two-dimensional print version, with each magazine dropping during the live event.

In addition to the incredible support of our subscribers, Antenna::Signals is made possible by grants from the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts, the The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, the RosaMary Foundation, the Ella West Freeman Foundation, New Orleans Arts Council, and the Louisiana Division of the Arts.
