In 1787, English philosopher Jeremy Bentham conceived what would be known as a “panopticon” – a circular prison with cells arranged around a central tower that gave guards the ability to see prisoners at all times. This design would go on to become a standard for prisons across the world and play on the theory that people behave better when they are being watched. Two years after the conception of this design, a man named Isaac Franklin was born and he would eventually become the owner of the largest and most powerful slave trading company in United States history. When he retired from slave trading as the wealthiest man in the South, he bought six plantations near New Orleans and named one of them “Angola” due to many of the slaves coming to Louisiana being from the African country of the same name. Less than 50 years later, the land would be bought by Samuel Lawrence James, a former officer of the Confederate States Army, and be converted into a prison. Today, this land still operates as Angola Prison housing 6,300 inmates, nearly 80% of whom are African-American. As our “land of the free” continues to affirm its paradoxical nature, artists and activists will continue to sit in an integral space to critique its foundation and function. Issue 014 of Antenna::Signals, entitled Panoptic, will explore the ways that freedom and safety have existed throughout this country’s history along with the ways that individuals have challenged the validity of these constructs.
