While music “sampling” is something that predates the beginning of hip-hop, the genre is responsible for the explosion of this technique. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, DJs took sampling to a new level through their interaction with and manipulation of the vinyl records they were playing. DJ Kool Herc is credited with originating the practice and others like DJ Grandmaster Flash helped cultivate it through methods such as changing turntable speeds and turning records manually. Today, sampling is a widely used technique as artists across genres reimagine music from the past to inspire new creations. Conceptually, the idea of using historical art or information to influence a new piece of work is something that has been utilized throughout the entirety of human history. On the opposite end of the human vitality spectrum, fracking is an issue that continues to obliterate our environment. Issue 015 of Antenna::Signals, entitled Extraction, will explore the ways in which acts of derivation positively and negatively impact our lived experiences while additionally highlighting individuals who utilize the past to inform the present and future throughout multiple fields of human endeavor.
