Description

Through layers of translucent vellum, <> <> (Morir es Vivir) uses drawings, photos, and the collected language of the New Orleans community to consider interconnectivity, individuality, death & living, learning from the past, inheritance, children & families, housing, labor, fossil fuels, prison, revolution, and imagination, all in response to the question: “What must die (institutionally, personally, relationship-wise, belief-wise) and what will thrive in its wake?” This publication shares community members’ responses to this question in written form without delineating speakers from one another, resulting in a collective authorship of a period of time during the 2021 pandemic

During 2021, while in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, Marta Rodriguez Maleck created an installation for the New Orleans Museum of Art and the New Orleans Public Library which invited people to discuss the topics included in the book. The content of book resulted in part from these conversations.

This book is the result of the artist’s 2022 Paper Machine Residency.
