On January 1, 1804, those enslaved on the island of Saint-Domingue officially declared their independence from French colonization and created what is now known as Haiti, the first independent black republic in the world. Five years later, more than 10,000 Haitians immigrated to New Orleans and doubled the size of the city – bringing with them many of the cultural facets that are now heavily imprinted within the city’s culture. As a result of this influx, along with additional deep influences from Spain, France and Africa, New Orleans now exists as the most culturally rich city in the United States. The amalgamation of so many different cultures has spawned characteristics that are specific to New Orleans, but unfortunately some of these influences have not been recognized as prominently as others. Issue 012 of Antenna::Signals will drop on March 27th and examine the theme of Strata by exploring New Orleans and her multilayered beauty through cultural, historical and ecological lenses. The individuals whose work will be featured in this issue illuminate this magic as they unearth many of the under-discussed narratives that continue to make New Orleans one of the most unique cities in the world.
Speakers will include:
- Dr. Laura Kelley – Historian and author of The Irish in New Orleans
- Councilwoman Cyndi Nguyen – 1st Asian-American elected to New Orleans City Council (District E)
- Charlotte Jones – Historic Interpreter and Muleteer
- Angel Parham – Professor and Author of American Routes: Racial Palimpsests and the Transformation of Race
- Sal Sunseri – Owner of P&J Oyster House
