On view: May 8th – June 6th
Jill Frank creates serious formal photographic portraits of people in moments not typically considered culturally important, reframing subjects to unsettle sedimented beliefs and perceptions. Some photographs were made during or immediately following chaotic social activities such as parties, games, and contests; others were made while the subjects were posing for their own Instagram feed. Celestials, on view at Antenna Gallery from May 8th – June 6th consists of two bodies of work in dialogue, everyone who woke up at the yellow house and Talent Show. Celestials, the title of the show, (antiquated theatrical slang for ‘best seats in the house’) references the crucial role of audience and spectatorship in the performance of identity.
