Dr. Sonia Sanchez reads at Ashe’ Power House Theater on July 1

Team Slam New Orleans and the Ashe’ Cultural Arts Center presents an evening of poetry at 6 p.m. on Friday, July 1, at Ashe’ Powerhouse Theater (1731 Baronne Street).

Dr. Sonia Sanchez, the National Park Service Centennial Poet Laureate, will headline the event. Team SNO members Katalyst Alcindor and Sha’Condria “ICON” Sibley will also be featured, as well as Jarvis DeBerry, Kelly Harris-DeBerry, Asali DeVan-Ecclesiastes, and Sunni Patterson.

An open mic will take place at 8:30 p.m. following the featured readings. Admission is free all night.

Dr. Sonia Sanchez is an African-American poet most often associated with the Black Arts Movement. She has written more than a dozen books of poetry, as well as plays and children’s books. At 81, the indefatigable writer is still fighting racism, sexism, violence, poverty, and oppression while she continues to mesmerize audiences with her verse around the world.
