Ian Clark is an American artist whose work ranges from narrative cinema and photography to experimental lens and light-based projects. One of Filmmaker’s 25 New Faces of Independent Film, his work has shown atthe Portland Art Museum, BAFICI, reRun, and Borscht 8, amongst others. Clark received his MFA in Digital Art from the University of Oregon, and is currently developing a body of art objects centered around his third feature, MMXIII. In 2009, he co-founded, directed, and curated the first-annual Eastern Oregon Film Festival. Clark works as a co-director of programming for the non-profit EOFF, which will host its 5th edition in February 2014.

An experimental self-portrait, MMXIII explores phenomenological subtlety, intersections of construct and verité, and the ways in which technology, landscape, and beauty coalesce. Here, an artist’s reflexive gestures investigate moving images and the nature of image construction, blurring the lines between cinema, still photography, and performance art.

A type of existence where interaction with the physical world is mediated by manufactured objects […] Nature has been subjugated into image, but if there’s any sense of loss or protest it’s buried deep in the subtext.”

— Paul Sbrizzi, HAMMER TO NAIL

There is a beautiful balance between [the] visual and sound design, and ideas gently emerge as to how we relate to nature, technology, and the past. Somehow in the end, I felt more story and emotion watching MMXIII than in most films I see.”
