DEEP. DOWN. DIRTY.
Deep.Down.Dirty – An Exploration of Southern Female Sexuality, begins October 10 at Antenna Gallery at 3161 Burgundy in the New Orleans
Bywater. Representing the work of eight female artists, Deep.Down.Dirty. explores the innate dualities of female sexual identity that arise from coming of age in the Deep South. The artists on display include Helen Maurene Cooper (Chicago, IL), Emily English (Lincoln, NE), Mary Elkins (Richmond, VA), Amanda Finn (Brooklyn, NY), Grace Mikell (New Olreans, LA), Adrian Price (New Orleans, LA), Amelia Raley (Austin, TX), and Kristin Wanek (Los Angeles, CA).
Each of the featured artists was raised in the deep South or was influenced by southern culture from a young age. Their work ranges
diverse media such as fabric arts, installation, painting, video art, ceramics, and photography. Though the artists share a common thread of being raised as southern women, each artist has approached the nebulous issue of sexual identity through completely divergent means. Deep.Down.Dirty examines the effects of a culture steeped in myth, history, and feminine ideals on the personal identities of these female
artists.
Deep.Down.Dirty. is curator Robin Atkinson’s New Orleans curatorial debut. Atkinson relocated to New Orleans in August of 2008 to work as the Curatorial Coordinator for Prospect.1. She has recently joined forces with Antenna Gallery which is operated by the artist-run 501c3 collective Press Street with the mission of promoting both art and literature in the community through dynamic projects, collaborations, and publications. Deep.Down.Dirty. will hold its Opening Event Saturday, October 10 from 6 – 9 PM during the St. Claude Second Saturday art openings. It will feature a performance by contemporary dancer Jen Whiddon at 8 PM in the gallery.
The opening will be followed by an Antenna Event at the AllWays Lounge at 2240 St. Claude Ave. The event begins at 10 PM and will include
performances by Jean-Eric (electro-dance from New Orleans), Eclipse Glasses (funk, soul, elctro, afrobeat, reggae and weirdo disco from Little
Rock, AR) and DJ Rusty Lazer (New Orleans, LA). Admission is $7. Proceeds benefit Antenna Gallery.
