Just in Time for Halloween, George Saunders Reads You a Ghost Story
byWe’re big fans of Big Class here at ROOM 220. We’ve shared water coolers, office chairs, and gallery space with the Big Class team, and we’re more than excited about their latest fundraising effort, The Great Ghost Story Auction.
A number of our generation’s greatest novelists, biographers, and podcasters have agreed to tell a ghost story – over the phone – to the highest bidders. What’s better? The ghost stories are written by young New Orleans writers as part of the work that Big Class is doing, and proceeds will help further support the voices of New Orleans’ young writers.
Why should you contribute now? First and foremost, Kiese Laymon, Roxane Gay, Jami Attenberg, or another literary giant will read you a ghost story. More importantly, the winning bidders will help support Big Class as they open their Youth Writing Center in 2018, and become a part of the renowned 826 National network as 826 New Orleans. Their new facility will open in the 7th Ward and feature a Haunting Supply Company storefront. In short, everything they do will be spirited.
The auction runs October 5 through Halloween. Participating storytellers include Jami Attenberg (The Middlesteins), Dave Eggers (The Circle), Isaac Fitzgerald (co-host of BuzzFeed News’ Morning Show, #AMtoDM), Angela Flournoy (The Turner House), Roxane Gay (Bad Feminist), Lauren Groff (Fates and Furies), Walter Isaacson (Steve Jobs), Kiese Laymon (How to Slowly Kill Yourself and Others in America), Kelly Link (Get in Trouble), Maurice Ruffin (We Cast a Shadow), George Saunders (Tenth of December), Glynn Washington (host of the podcast Snap Judgment), and Avery Trufelman (producer of the podcast 99% Invisible).
