New Orleans Independent Bookstore Day 2019
Independent bookstores are not just stores—they are community centers and local anchors run by passionate readers. They are entire universes of ideas that contain the possibility of real serendipity. They are lively performance spaces and quiet places where aimless perusal is a day well spent.
2019 Independent Bookstore Day marks the fifth anniversary of celebrating independent bookstores nationwide with literary parties around the country. While Bookstore Day was on April 27th in most other locales, in New Orleans we have our own special day of celebration two-weeks later on Saturday, May 11, so as not to conflict with Jazz Fest.
Please come by to celebrate Independent Bookstore Day with us and show your support for this amazing movement. We’ll have fun together along with stimulating activities all day long. And, we are also featuring some exclusive literary-themed art and gift items you will want to have to remember this special day.
Octavia Books, Garden District Book Shop, Tubby & Coo’s Mid-City Book Shop, and Blue Cypress Books are celebrating Independent Bookstore Day in New Orleans. Each store is planning special activities; and together we are offering the chance to win $200 in gift certificates for book lovers who visit all four participating New Orleans bookstores as part of a fun, city-wide literary quest. Customers can pick up a “passport” at any participating store and will gain a sticker for each shop they visit. Visit all four shops to get entered into a raffle to win a $50 gift card to each participating store! Each store will also be selling exclusive literary-themed books, art, and gift items created just for Independent Bookstore Day.
At Octavia Books, special author appearances with an Independent Bookstore Day twist include:
- 3:00pm – Author Raymond Arroyo presents WILL WILDER: THE AMULET OF POWER.
- 6:00pm – Biographer Nigel Hamilton presents WAR AND PEACE: FDR’s Final Odyssey: D-Day to Yalta, 1943-1945
We will also be unveiling a new T-shirt created specially for Octavia Books by New Orleans graphic artist Tom Varisco.
And, throughout the day, we will also be giving out some fantastic free gifts and prizes.
Did we mention that there will be free Taza Chocolate tasting all day!!!
